paper marbling

fill a tray with water. blow, fan, stir, dab, and drag paint or colored ink across its surface. put a sheet of washi paper on top to stain it with the floating art.

though called “turkish” paper marbling by europeans, this design technique was developed in east asia, central asia, and the islamic world. it is an important part of turkic, tajik, indian, and other asian and middle eastern cultures.

I want to try this.

I’ve done this! Long, long ago (as in, when I was in 4th grade), but it was a lot of fun. Hmmm, I’ll have to check and see what mediums need to be used for this, because doing marbled papers with the Noodler’s Black Swan In Australian Roses ink would be very pretty.

Killer graphic output focused on the intersection of art and architectural representation. Incredibly beautiful work. I sense the influence of Lebbeus Woods, Wes Jones, and Neil Denari at work here, yet the work is utterly fresh and vibrant, not at all derivative.

This series contains abstracted planimetric drawings and eerily-serene cityscapes that suggest the changing contours of urban settlements. They represent an idea of a degenerate futurism, yet one might find similar typologies and scenes in places such as the favelas of Brazil and North Africa, and in overpopulated cities such as Lagos, Mexico City, and Mumbai. Though outputted digitally, the drawings possess a textured and painterly quality as a result of combining hand-drawn sketches, industrial textures, surfaces of deteriorated paper, and digital architectural models.
A constant interplay between digital and analog processes is important in my work, resulting in a highly layered set of documents. The drawings presented here started out as digital images that were outputted, sketched and drawn over, and scanned back into the computer in order to be retraced, textured, and layered.

Fabienne Rivory is an artist and photographer based in Paris. Since 2007, Fabienne explores in the project “Labokoff” interactions between photography and painting, real world and imagination, memories and reality. Built around photographs that are picked in her personal collection, her images are painted with gouache or ink, employed as textures, splatters or lines, that shifts the images in a dreamy register. These are dreamed images trying to recreate a momentary emotion that anyone can feel in front of nature’s beauty, a particular architectural shape, a landscape passing by or the silhouette of a beloved one.
